Policy Documents
Asda make it extremely difficult to obtain information. The food store website contains nothing. The corporate website has a few webpages of interest.
Animal Welfare: A rather poor effort a giving information.
Animal Welfare Report 2024 (PDF): The report ironically begins “We know that animal welfare is a key concern for the customers we serve” yet the report is not on the Adsa store website and is not easy to find on the corporate website.
Stunning Policy
All livestock species must be stunned using appropriate species-specific methods in accordance with European regulatory requirements (Regulation 1099/2009 EC).
Halal/Kosher in Store
Asda stocks third-party branded halal and kosher products “in stores where they are most valued,” with certification or accreditation shown on-pack; it does not offer non-stunned own-brand halal.
Sourcing / Suppliers / Country of Origin
- Beef: Asda committed to 100% British beef on fresh meat counters from October 2021, after a 2020 controversy in which it (and Sainsbury’s) briefly sold imported Polish beef mince, supplied via ABP Food Group, during a COVID-related supply disruption — a move criticised by the National Beef Association at the time.
- Lamb: British lamb is supplemented by lamb from New Zealand..
- Chicken: 98.2% is slaughtered using CAS (stun to kill), the remainder by electric. (63.6% bi-phasic, 34.6% multiphasic).
Warnings
NSS research (2018) listed Asda among four chains found selling non-stunned halal meat online without clear labelling at the time; more recent (2025) statements from Asda describe a policy of universal pre-stunning with clearly labelled branded halal/kosher lines.
