Stunning Policy
Tesco requires all it’s own-label (“Tesco” and “Tesco Finest”) products to come from pre-stunned animals.
Halal/Kosher in Store
Tesco does not sell any own-label kosher meat at all, because kosher law requires non-stunning, which conflicts with Tesco’s own-label policy.
Tesco does sell third-party branded kosher and halal lines in some stores which may include both stunned and non-stunned products.
Sourcing / Suppliers / Country of Origin
- Fresh chicken, sausages, and Tesco Finest lamb and pork are sourced as British.
- Fresh beef has been 100% UK/Ireland since 2018.
- Key beef/lamb supplier: Dunbia (Northern Ireland/GB).
- Tesco has stated it will not switch to non-UK/Irish beef despite the US trade deal.
- Some processed/ready-meal chicken has historically been sourced from Thailand.
Warnings
Tesco has previously confirmed that lamb and chicken are the fresh categories most likely to have received a “halal blessing” without being labelled as halal, while stating its British Organic Lamb, British Counter Lamb, and Organic/Finest Free Range Chicken lines are guaranteed not to have received a halal blessing. See https://www.secularism.org.uk.
National Secular Society research (2018) found Tesco selling non-stunned halal meat online without clear labelling; a 2025/26 parliamentary debate cited Tesco among retailers that have, at various points, sold halal or kosher meat “without informing the consumer.”
