Farm Animal Health and Welfare Policy, July 2024 (PDF)
Farm Animal Welfare Policy 2022: This document is still lined to on Lidl’s website. It is not clear whether it has been superseded by Farm Animal Health and Welfare Policy, July 2024 (PDF).
Stunning Policy
“All farm animals entering the Lidl GB supply chain must be stunned prior to slaughter and remain unconscious and insensible to pain from the initial stun until death occurs. These methods will be dependent on the species and abattoir. All operations must be in accordance with the Welfare at Time of Killing (WATOK) regulations and the EU 1099/2009 regulations.”
Halal/Kosher in Store
No non-stun halal or kosher lines identified in available research; a 2018 NSS review noted it could not fully confirm Lidl’s online range at that time because nationwide product search wasn’t available, but Lidl’s stated policy is universal pre-stunning.
Sourcing / Suppliers / Country of Origin
- Lidl GB sources 100% of its everyday chicken, pork and beef from British suppliers.
- Key beef supplier: Dunbia. The Lidl policy gives little information about beef compared to lamb, pig and poultry.
- Chicken: Key suppliers are Cranswick Eye, Traditional Norfolk Poultry (free range, corn fed) and Moy Park (organic free range). Cranswick and TNP both slaughter using CAS (stun to kill). Mor Park is unknown.
- Lamb: British lamb is supplemented by lamb from New Zealand and Australia to standards Lidl says are comparable to Red Tractor.
Warnings
The 2022 policy states: “All lamb sold within Lidl Welsh stores must be sourced from Welsh suppliers all year round. Equally, all lamb sold within Lidl stores in Scotland, must be sourced from Scottish suppliers. This promise is followed all year round, and ensures that transportation times are minimised as much as possible.” This statement is absent in the 2024 policy and this is reflected by New Zealand and Australian meeat now being sold in Wales and Scotland.
