At Field & Flower we prohibit any of our animals being slaughtered with shechita (kosher) or Halal slaughter methods, and we don’t buy any meat from, or use, any abattoirs that perform non-stun slaughter. We also prohibit any gas stunning methods of any animals. We independently audit all abattoirs in our supply chain with a qualified and approved animal welfare auditor who is a member of the Humane Slaughter Association, as we are, and audits to their standards, which our own reflect.
Across poultry and beef we use irreversible stun before slaughter (electro stun on chicken and percussive stun on beef), and in pork and lamb we use an electrical stun that is reversible, but in small, low throughput abattoirs, this has no effect on animal welfare because the animal goes through exsanguination long before consciousness is regained – typically a 15 second window. This stunning method is most welfare-friendly in small abattoirs because animals can be moved in small, calm groups with one or two slaughtermen, rather than a single fast race in a large stun-to-kill electrical system.
The priority of the animal is our chief concern in food and farming, and we understand that it is most important to monitor this through slaughter. We are sure that our checks and processes ensure the best possible welfare for the animals in our care.
